Have you ever found yourself walking around Liberty Square at the Magic Kingdom and noticed that the road has a strange brownish colored river running down the center of it? Well, in today's WDW trivia article, I'm going to tell you just what the brown river is and why you may think twice before walking through it again on your next trip to Walt Disney World.
Themed after Colonial America, Liberty Square is one of the lands at the Magic Kingdom that takes you to a whole new world in every possible way.
Now, before I tell you the secret behind that brown river, I should explain a little about the world of Colonial America. Specifically, I'd like to give you a little background on how the settlers took care of...bodily waste of course! I assure you that even back in the 1700's, everybody had to go!
The challenge to the settlers was what to do with the waste since "water closets" (ie. bathrooms) weren't invented until 1778 in England and the first flushable toilet didn't exist until 1852.
Ultimately, the answer was simple: they would collect the waste in buckets and when the buckets got full, they would throw the contents out the window into the street (naturally!). When many settlers did this at the same time, the result was a trail of waste that lead down the road.
Now, fast forward to modern times and we find ourselves wondering what Walt Disney Imagineering was thinking putting this strange brown river through the middle of Liberty Square. The answer: to keep things historically accurate!
So the next time you find yourself walking down Liberty Square, stop and remind yourself what exactly your walking through! If it's a busy park day (as always!), maybe this little story will put a smile on your face as you realize that only Disney would make you walk through metaphorical pooh on your way to the Hall of Presidents.
